Vanzy returns as two more leave

Last updated : 10 June 2010 By Stuart Gillespie

The return of Vanzy, who left the club two years ago for Hibs, was rumoured sometime last week. Being linked with any player at that point was a surprise as we didn't have a manager, and the fact van Zanten - who is Irish but has a Dutch dad - has now signed makes you wonder if this was entirely Lennon's decision.

There is also some scepticism among fans that we have signed a player who was released by two SPL clubs last season. Hibs ditched him at the end of August and, after a successful spell at Morton, he was signed by Hamilton. However, he struggled for games there and was let go at the end of the season, so the apprehension is perhaps understandable. It'll be interesting to see how he does over the duration of his new, two year contract.

Vanzy arrived from Celtic in 2003 and quickly established himself at rightback. He liked getting forward and scored a few goals, helping the side win the double in 2006 before leaving for pastures new in 2008.

van Zanten's return should help offset the departure of Ross, as both can play at rightback and right midfield and Vanzy could well be a cheaper option. After an excellent first season in 2008/09 following his arrival from Falkirk - including a superb performance against his former club that helped us stay up - Ross was disappointing last season and missed te last few months through injury. His departure was much rumoured and it is no surprise to hear he has been let go.

It's not exactly shock news that Brighton is leaving either. He's played hardly any games since signing from Millwall two years ago as he spent much of that time injured, although he did score against Falkirk last season.

This news means the only out of contract players who don't know their futures are Andy Dorman - who looks set to leave anyway - Garry Brady, Allan Johnston and Steven Robb. Given this latest news, it would not be surprised if they are told to leave in the next few days.
