Support Saints On Tuesday

Last updated : 18 May 2005 By Stuart Gillespie
Incase you have been living on Mars, let me bring you up to speed. For Saints to clear their debt and build a new ground, they need to sell Love Street to a supermarket company. At present Love Street is not zoned for retail, something the club are trying to get changed. The bank want their money back (and soon) so we have to leave Love Street one way or the other. If we don't get permission to sell to a supermarket company we'll probably have to sell to a property developer. This would clear the debts but wouldn't leave enough for a new ground and could be the beginning of the end.

Unlike a planning meeting a few weeks ago, Tuesday's meeting is open to all and takes place at the council headquarters in Paisley, starting at 12 noon. It is expected that in a few days the town planner will announce whether we can get the local plan changed to allow a supermarket to be built. The outcome of this will probably be that it shouldn't, but the council are allowed to go against the recommendation if they wish, although this could cause bother somewhere else.

No decision has been made and we won't know for sure what is happening until Tuesday (the board can also appeal if it goes against us). There is still time to write to the council and tell them how important Saints are. I got two letters today saying my letter had been acknowledged and would be taken into consideration. Standard stuff but every letter they get is another voice they have to listen to and one more step away from them using the excuse that no one seems to care.

The address to write to is: The Director of Planning
Gilmour House
County Square
Gilmour Street
Paisley
PA1 1BY

Or you could write to the chief executive of Renfrewshire Council, whose address is: Mr Tom Scholes
Chief Executive
Renfrewshire Council
HQ North Building
County Buildings
Cotton Street
Paisley
PA1 1WB

Get writing and go on Tuesday. Sadly I can't go due to exams but if other folk can go then do. If someone can give me a report to publish (hopefully of a good outcome) then I'd greatly appreciate it.
