Shuggy Set For Shock Return!

Last updated : 04 April 2012 By Stuart Gillespie
Hugh Murray will best be remembered for a goal against Stirling Albion which kept the club up in 1998, and very possibly kept the club alive. The following season Shuggy had a nightmare but improved drasitcally with the arrival of Tom Hendrie. In the SPL he wasn't great but improved a bit last season, probably being one of the club's best players.

His contract expired in the summer, and Saints offered him a new one. While it represented a wage cut, he had still been on SPL wages in division 1 so was returning to first division levels, and would have been the highest paid player at the club. He decided to reject this offer and came out with some rubbish that Nicolas Anelka would have been proud of, about how he was going to be paid less than some players who weren't first teamers! He went on trial at Macclesfield but after signing some other people they didn't have enough money to offer him a deal. Today, both the Daily Record and The Herald , and probably some other papers I don't have access to, report that Murray is set for a Love Street return. Last week he had been linked with Queen of the South however this seems to just have been rumour.

I have mixed feelings about this. I don't have a problem with him leaving to look for more money as that's what we'd all do. However I object to the way he badmouthed the club. Junior Mendes said he wouldn't be leaving for more money but instead would be going back to England, before getting lost on the way and going to Dunfermline. I don't have a problem with players leaving for whatever reason they wish, as long as they don't spout utter rubbish, or lead the club the wrong way. If Shuggy apologises then I'd be delighted to take him back, as he'd still be able to do a job in our midfield. There had been rumours recently that he was seen at Love Street, and it seems these could now be true.

Should Shuggy return to Love Street he'd be the latest in a line of Saints to have returned, which includes Ricky Gillies, Barry Lavety and Junior Mendes. He may even make his return against Clyde tomorrow, especially with Gillies suspended.

The Herald also confirms that former Saint Andy Roddie will sign for Peterhead today, something we reported earlier in the week, whilst the Daily Record says that as well as possibly resigning Shuggy, we may also be signing trialists Abdul Saleem Senanu and Ivan Kristo before the transfer deadline at the end of August.

Anyway seeing as he might be coming back I've managed to get a more up to date picture of Shuggy whilst he was playing for us in the SPL.
