McGowan closes in on Saints return

McGowan had another year left on his contract in the East End of Glasgow but is clearly out of Neil Lennon's plans and is being allowed to leave. Rumours suggest we'll either pay a nominal fee for him or get him for free, with Celtic entitled to most of any future transfer fee.

McGowan did well at times last season but was frustrating at others. However, getting him permanently would be a good bit of businesses and it could happen soon.

Saints general manager Brian Caldwell said today: “We are very hopeful that we can conclude terms with Celtic to bring Paul McGowan here on a permanent basis. With a bit of luck we can complete the paperwork with Celtic over the next 24 hours or so. Paul did very well for us last season and he is keen to come to St Mirren and continue on from there.”

Twitter tonight suggests at least one new signing will be unveiled next week and it could be McGowan, although we are also in discussions with potential replacements for goalie Paul Gallacher.
