Ricky Gillies

Name: Ricky Gillies

Current Club: Soccer Innovation

Position: Midfielder

Saints Career: A club legend who had two spells at Love Street. Ricky came through the youth set-up and made his first team debut against Cowdenbeath in 1992/93. He scored on his debut and still holds the record as our youngest ever scorer. He was one of the hottest properties in Scotland a few years later, with manager Tony Fitzpatrick claiming he could play for AC Milan! Arsenal were interested but he eventually went to Aberdeen. He had a miserable time at Pittodrie and returned to Saints on loan at the end of the Millenium Champions season. That move became permanent in the summer and he was one of the few bright spots of our ill fated SPL season. He was our top scorer, twice scoring against Aberdeen, but the highlight was his last minute winner in a live TV game against relegation rivals Dundee United. It took him a while to get going in the first division, although his form gradually picked up and he looked good for a teim. However, in the 2004/05 season he seemed to fall out of favour and - just months after his testimonial - he was released in the summer of 2005.

Post Saints Career: Spells with Partick Thistle, Stranraer, Hawke's Bay United and Neilston followed before he hung up his boots. He now runs a football coaching company, whose coaches include former Saints Paul McKnight and Ludovic Roy.
