Ex Saints: John Potter

Last updated : 18 July 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

Name: John Potter

Current Club: Dunfermline Athletic

Position: Defender

Saints Career: John arrived from Clyde in the summer of 2005 and proved to be a great signing as he helped the club to win both the League Challenge Cup and first division, scoring in the famous Scottish Cup win over Motherwell along the way. Seemed to adapt OK to the SPL at first, but somewhere around the start of 2009 things started to go wrong - by which point he'd already been captain. His confidence was completely shot after the split and he was finally dropped by Gus MacPherson - something that should have happened much sooner. Although he improved the following season, he was never quite the same again. His heading and distribution were poor and many fans believe he was largely at fault for the number of last minute goals we conceded - but somehow he seemed to play every week. It was therefore a bit of a surprise when he was let go in 2011 - especially to the player himself, who'd been told he would get a new contract!

Post Saints Career: Shortly after leaving Saints, John returned to Dunfermline - who he'd been with before moving to Clyde. He had a shocking first half of the season - although in fairness the same went for most of the Pars defence - and was sent on loan to Queen of the South in January. There he rejoined former Buddies boss Gus MacPherson but they couldn't stop the Doonhamers sliding into the second division. It gave him the unwanted achievement of playing for two clubs that went down in the same season and the Pars let him go after his Queens' loan deal expired. However, after spending the summer without a club the Pars took him back as a player but also as a coach for their under-20 side.
