Ex Saints: Hugh Murray

Last updated : 22 June 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

Name: Hugh Murray

Current Club: Partick Thistle

Position: Midfielder

Saints Career: Hugh came through the Saints youth system and broke into the side in 1997. He established himself in 1997/98 and on May 2, 1998 scored a screamer against Stirling that secured the club's first division status - and very possibly existence. The next season his form dipped, but it picked up again the following year as we swashbuckled our way to the first division title. He scored five goals along the way, including a keepy-uppy effort against Clydebank. Struggled in the SPL but recovered again back in the first division. In 2002 he turned down a new contract and tried his luck in England, but after failing to win a deal at Mansfield he came back to Love Street and stayed at the club for the next decade. In 2005/06 he won both the first division and League Challenge Cup, meaning he became the first player to win three trophies with the Buddies. Scored another crucial goal in May 2007 as we battled for relegation, but didn't bag another until late 2009 - and scored a double against Motherwell! He also played in that season's League Cup Final, although had to be subbed to avoid being sent off. Considering what happened, that might not have been the best idea... He was written off numerous times but always seemed to bounce back - even when Danny Lennon tried to punt him to Dunfermline in 2011. In May 2011 he broke the all-time Saints appearance record held by Tony Fitzpatrick - who gave him his debut - when he played against Hamilton. Unfortunately, he lasted just 10 minutes before getting himself injured while making a typical Shuggy tackle - and that injury saw him ruled out for the first half of the 2011/12 season. He made his comeback against Rangers and his arrival from the bench played a key part in seeing the game out but he struggled to re-establish himself in the side. It was therefore no surprise to see his time at Saints finally end in the summer of 2012. A true club legend, he enjoyed a testimonial against Derby County in 2007.

Post Saints Career: Shuggy wasn't without a club for long as he was quickly snapped up by Partick Thistle for their push to the SPL.
