Ex Saints: Alex Miller

Last updated : 26 January 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

Name: Alex Miller

Current Club: Sibir Novosibirsk

Position: Manager

Saints Career: A Rangers defender during his playing days, Alex Miller took over as Saints boss in 1983 - and as that was before Iw as born I can't really say much! Guided us to a terrific European victory over Sparta Prague but also oversaw the infamous day where Celtic gubbed us 5-0 to win the 1986 league title. A few months later he was sacked after we were gubbed by Forfar in the League Cup - although we won the Scottish Cup the same season under Alex Smith.

Post Saints Career: After leaving us Alex had a 10 year spell in charge of Hibs, winning the League Cup in 1991 after the club overcame severe financial troubles and also taking them to third in the league. Sacked in 1996 he then ended up at Aberdeen, although that didn't last long (Aberdeen bosses usually didn't in those days!). He landed on his feet, taking on a director of football role at Liverpool in 1999 and held various capacities there before taking over at Japanese side JEF United in 2008. That ended in 2009 and he moved to AIK in Sweden the following year, being sacked after six months. At the start of 2012 he was handed the job of managing Sibir Novosibirsk, becoming the first Brit to manage a Russian side in the process.
