Many players just fade away after being let go by Celtic but Jim Goodwin has carved out a solid career for himself in the English lower leagues, winning League One with Scunthorpe and even being capped for Ireland. In 2010 he returned to Scotland when he joined Hamilton before moving to Saints at the start of 2011. A defensive midfielder was not something we needed, but getting Jim in did at least weaken our relegation rivals. The following season he started in terrific form and played a key role in our new passing style of play, bossing the midfield after being made captain and scoring the odd screamer while making key tackles. There was much delight when he turned down Hibs to extend his stay until 2014. His form seemed to drop off a bit after that and at the start of the following season he was also a bit inconsistent and picked up a ridiculous number of bookings, but a move into defence seemed to see him look more assured. Became just the fourth skipper in Saints history to lift a trophy at Hampden by captaining the team to League Cup glory in 2013. As well as his tackling and passing he can also produce a good shot, all his goals so far for the Buddies being long range screamers.
