Pizza delivery looked set to be David's future after he was let go by Partick Thistle, but he was brought to Saints and made his first team debut against Kilmarnock towards the end of 2007. Quickly established himself at rightback, scoring against Dumbarton in the Scottish Cup. He had to wait for his chance the following season and most of his appearances came at leftback after Gus MacPherson realised even a bucket would be better there than Mo Camara. Played there for most of the following season and, despite it not being his preferred position, won a number of player of the season awards. He was offered an extended contract but turned it down due to a desire to play in England. However, the following season his appearances were curtailed by injury and he agreed to stay for the coming campaign, again starting off with injury problems. Started to get more of a game towards the end of 2011, featuring at rightback, centre half and even as a holding midfielder. Since then he has struggled for game time - partly because of injury and partly because his versatility makes it hard for him to nail down a regular place.
