Saints 3-1 Stranraer

I warned in the preview that Stranraer were boring and defensive and by god I was right. As soon as they scored in the twentieth minute through Michael Moore you knew that Saints would be in a whole lot of trouble. Sure enough, they took ages over throw ins and corners, whilst keeper Barry John Corr seemed in no hurry with his kick outs. Strangely, this problem disappeared when Saints took the lead in the second half!

There was just one change to the Saints team that beat Spartans in midweek, with Simon Lappin replacing Mark Corcoran. After a boring opening twenty minutes, in which neither team had threatened, Stranraer took the lead. Tony Bullock flapped at a corner, it was played back in and Moore prodded it home.

This was bad as it meant time wasting, which went unpunished despite several offences. Fortunately, Saints were behind for just seven minutes. John Sutton was fouled by Alex Keddie just outside the box, Andy Millen squared the free kick to Iain Anderson and he drilled it into the net. Game on!

So, with the scores level you'd imagine that Stranraer would stop time wasting? Don't be stupid! Corr continued to be the main offender, yet went unpunished, and the visitors could have taken an undeserved lead just before half time when Bullock just saved a Moore header.

So, what's the best way to get round the time wasting? Simple, take the lead. Right at the start of the second half an Ian Maxwell throw in was flicked on by Stranraer's Murray Henderson, and Simon Lappin was there to hammer the ball into the top corner with his right foot, which most of us assumed was for standing on.

Stewart Kean could have doubled the lead shortly after when a terrible shot from Charlie Adam turned into a cracking pass to the striker, but his shot was saved by Corr.

Stranraer decided to attack a bit more after this and could have grabbed an equaliser. A Bryan Gilfillan free kick was deflected into Bullock's arms, Moore headed just over from a corner whilst some terrible defending from Kevin McGowne allowed Sharp to fire just over.

Fortunately, five minutes from time Saints put the game all beyond doubt. Sutton was fouled by Keddie once more, except this time inside the box, and after Sutton, Andy Millen and Billy Mehmet had decided who was taking the spot kick, Sutton fired it past Corr.

We could even have had a fourth, but Mehmet's pass across goal was just out of Sutton's reach whilst Lappin hit the bar. 3-1 is enough though and gets us back on track, shame Ross County and St. Johnstone won though.

If I was a Stranraer fan I'd contemplate suicide having to watch that sort of football away from home every week. All out defence until you're a goal behind combined with massive timewasting is not fun. Supporters of most other first division clubs would gladly see them relegated, and I can see why after today!
