Saints 3-1 Stenhousemuir

As expected, Saints boss Gus MacPherson rested a few players, but not many. Mehmet made his first start of the season, as did Mark Corcoran and Ian Maxwell, whilst Andy Millen also returned to the starting lineup.

It took Saints just two attacks to go 2-0 up. The first came after five minutes, Sutton miscontrolling Maxwell's long pass directly into Mehmet's pass and he drilled it into the bottom corner. The second came after 13 minutes, a run forward by Garry Brady producing a pass to Sutton that allowed him to turn and fire into the net.

Mehmet then forced Stenny keeper Willie McCulloch into a good save before volleying a Brady cross off the bar. The third eventually came on 28 minutes, Sutton laying off to Mehmet whose miscontrol allowed him to skin Joe McAlpine and give McCulloch no chance with his shot.

Gmae over? Don't be daft! Shaun Dillon forced Chris Smith into a good save from his free kick, before Kevin McLeish and Paul Murphy combined to present Gareth Hutchison with an opportunity from two yards out that he put wide. Oops!

Saints continued their dominance in the second half, with Sutton, Lappin and Brady all going close to extending the advantage. Dillon was then shown a second yellow after two dodgy challenges, before Alex Burke finally made his Saints debut. The former Ross County man looked quite bright, going close with one effort before setting up Lappin to fire wide.

Saints decided that this had been a bit too easy and not very exciting, so decided to make things interesting. Kirk Broadfoot fould David Templeton, and the resulting free kick from John Paul McBride was played back to Joe McAlpine, whose drive was helped past Smith by a touch from Thomas Sinclair. A few minutes later, another McBride free kick was headed just over by Murphy, with Smith doing his best impression of David James.

That was as close as we came to disaster, and Saints deservedly find themselves in the draw for the next round. A home tie against anyone will be ideal, but after last night I'm not so keen on a trip tp Hampden to face Queen's Park!
