Saints 3-0 Dumbarton

It could have been more had it not been for some wayward finishing and decent goalkeeping, but let's not be greedy. We've avoided another embarrassment, we're through to the next round and we got a few goals - and some cracking ones at that.

It took Saints just over a quarter of an hour to score, by which point Mehmet and Craig Dargo had both gone close to getting a goal. When the opener came, it was worth waiting for. Barron's cross was missed in the middle by a Dumbarton defender and Corcoran was there to unleash a stunning volley past David Crawford. It could have gone anywhere - fortunately it flew into the net.

Saints were well in control and Dargo should have opened his Saints account when he headed straight at Crwaford before shooting against his legs. Fortunately, it didn't matter as just before half time someone else got their first Saints goal. Corcoran's corner was only cleared to Barron, who controlled the ball before firing it past Crawford for his first ever first team goal.

Alex Burke should have followed suit with his first Saints goal a few minutes later, but blazed Corcoran's cut back just over. Corcoran was causing problems all afternoon with his runs forward, but often his final decision making was a bit suspect.

Andy Dorman was introduced for the last half hour when he replaced Burke, and almost got a debut goal when he dragged a shot wide. He also made some meaty challenges and was lucky to escape a booking - it will be interesting to see what he does against SPL opposition.

The closest Dumbarton went was when sub Ryan Russell's shot was deflected just over, but really there was little chance of them getting back into the game. Mehmet finished things off with 20 minutes to go - his shot proving unstoppable for Crawford, who could only bundle it into the net. In fairness, the Dumbarton keeper was carrying an injury and he was replaced just after.

That was the end of the goals, although Mehmet and Dargo also went close to adding more, while Chris Hamilton went close at the other end. It could, and perhaps should, have been more but let's not go using up our "goal quota"!.

Only four teams are definitely through to the fifth round tonight - and we're one of them. Let's hope this is the start of a long cup run.
