Saints 2-2 Motherwell

The first half was pretty much a non event. Saints tried playing the long ball up too big Mixu, but it didn't work and we had hardly any chances. At the other end, Craig Hinchcliffe had to look sharp on a few occasions as the defence looked shaky. Kevin McGowne and Andy Millen were awful all night but, in fairness, fellow defender Kirk Broadfoot wasn't much better. The only other incident saw Motherwell's Brian Kerr stretchered off after a mad lunge caused harm to no one but himself.

At half time Hinchcliffe went off to be replaced by former Well player Stevie Woods, much to the delight (in a sort of "oh good they've got Scrimmy playing" kind of way) of the travelling support. Ryan McCay and John Baird also came on, replacing Simon Lappin and Mixu.

The second half was much better, though not for Saints Mark Crilly. After a wild challenge by David Clarkson he had to limp off. Clarkson was lucky not to pick up more than a booking. John O'neill replaced him.

Woods looked like he would prove some of the doubters wrong about his abilities when he pulled off a stunning save. However, not much later Well had scored the opener. The defence was posted missing, and one of their players fired almost straight at Woods. Poor defending and poor goal keeping combined.

Fortunately, Saints were level just a few minutes later, with the ball being headed around the box a bit before Baird hit an overhead kick (of sorts) past one time Saints goalie Gordon Marshall. Now things were going to get interesting.

Sadly, the ref ruined things for the rest of the game, giving Motherwell a free kick any time a Saints player went near. With just a few minutes left, Saints were caught out in the old fashioned way. A free kick which never was was easily headed past Woods. What have we been working on in training?

Once again, Saints response was almost immediate. Baird won a free kick, and after some decent play Eddie Annand, on for Brian McGinty, actually managed to score when he headed past Marshall.

There was one final poor decision from the ref to come. Having already given Motherwell a free kick in the first half for a foul in the box, he turned down a stone wall penalty claim. Nice one.

Thank goodness it was only a friendly as the performance was pretty poor. The bright point was a good performance from John Baird, and Eddie Annand scoring was good.

Roll on the season and the end of friendlies.
