Saints 2-1 Morton

We perhaps made things harder for ourselves than we should have done, but this was relatively straightforward. We created a reasonable number of chances but were denied by good defending or poor finishing and were almost made to pay for it when Morton equalised. However, after we went back in front we were rarely troubled.

The excellent Michael Higdon nearly scored a fantastic opener after just four minutes when he brought down Stephen McGinn's stunning pass before shooting narrowly over. The big striker turned provider after 20 minutes when he set up Dorman, but somehow the midfielder curled his effort wide. What's more worrying is why it was the man who was supposed to be on the right wing that was taking a shot from the left hand side of the box!

An amusingly scrappy goal saw Dorman make amends and put us in front shortly before the break. Steven Robb's cross was headed back by Michael Higdon and Dennis Wyness sclaffed it in the general direction of the goal. After some comic Morton defending, the ball bounced off Dorman and over the line.

Morton's equaliser a couple of minutes after the break was slightly more clinical, Brian Wake and Jim McAllister combining to allow Allan Jenkins to slide the ball past Paul Gallacher. The Morton fans reacted as if they'd just scored an important goal in a big game rather than some pre-season kick about. Their team responded but failed to create much, although Wake did have a goal chopped off for offside.

Instead, the next goal came at the other end. O'Donnell - on for Robb - saw a shot saved by Colin Stewart after he'd met Michael Higdon's flick on, but moments later he was in the right place to thump home a header from Craig Dargo's cross. Dorman tried to claim it was his goal but, as far as I'm concerned, it was Stephen's goal.

Morton nearly equalised again when Jenkins found himself through once more, but this time Gallacher saved his effort. Billy Mehmet, Tom Brighton, Dargo and O'Donnell all went close to increasing Saints lead but in the end we had to settle for a single goal victory.

Highlights for me were the performances of O'Donnell, Dargo, Dorman and Higdon. I also thought Robb did well, but a few of last season's problems remain. Trialist Ross Harvey was only given 15 minutes to impress and it's hard to make any worthwhile comments on his performance - so I won't bother!
