Saints 2-0 Ross County

Last updated : 15 October 2005 By Stuart Gillespie
The first quarter is over and Saints are top of the league. We're two points ahead of County, whohave a game in hand, and three ahead of Hamilton. Could things be any better? How about a cup final to look forward to and a team outside the Old Firm topping the SPL, or is that going too far...

Anyway, this game was relatively easy for Saints and you'd have been mistaken for thinking Saints were top before the game started, rather than County. The break has clearly done us some good, and the performance from every player (including Millen and McGowne) was superb.

Right from the off Saints were on top, Stewart Kean forcing Stuart Garden into a good save early on. Next time Saints attacked they scored, Charlie Adam's cross finding John Sutton unmarked in the box and he gave Garden no chance with his header.

Sadly Ross County's first attack almost saw them score. Alex Burke went for a wander inside the box, almost fell over, then was tackled by John Potter. Referee Mike McCurry gave a penalty, although from where I was sitting Potter looked to have won the ball first. Whatever, it didn't matter as Burke hit the post and County missed the rebound.

One way traffic then ensued at the other end, with Sutton and Kean both going close with volleys. Kean then hit the post whil Hugh Murray hammered the rebound wide, whilst Adam had an effort that hit the bars.

The second half started a bit more quietly, although Saints were still on top. Finally, with just under half an hour left some comedy ensued. A terrible pass from one Ross County defender to another ended up going in the direction of goalkeeper Garden. Sutton beat him to it, rounded him and slotted home his second, much to the delight of the Saints fans, who took about 60 seconds to begin singing "We're top of the league and you're no." We hardly ever get this sort of luck, so it's nice that we finally did.

That was it as far as scoring went. Goalkeeper Chris Smith picked up an injury but played on, although the County player he flattened had to be subbed. Saints had more chances but couldn't take them, and in reality we could have had five or six. However, three 2-0 wins are better than one 6-0 one, so let's hope we're saving our goals for Dundee next week!

This win was well deserved and a great result after the game against Hamilton last weekend. Sutton and Kean are linking up well, let's hope it continues and we can stay at the top for a few more weeks yet.
