Saints 2-0 Motherwell

With two wins from two games, and Celtic and Hearts not playing until tomorrow, Saints are proudly sitting top of the pile until tomorrow evening at least. If tomorrow's a draw, we'll even head to Parkhead next week top of the league!

This was not that great a game, although it seemed a bit better because of the atmosphere and the sizeable Saints crowd in for the flag raising party. Unlike 6 years ago, Saints were able to show that they have more than earnt their place in Scotland's top flight.

It took until Saints first attack for the first goal to come. Hugh Murray played the ball wide to David van Zanten. The Dutch Irishman played a great ball through to Stewart Kean, who fantastically spun himself away from his marker. This gave Keano the space needed to cross, and John Sutton couldn't miss from about six inches to fire Saints into the lead.

Motherwell had barely threatened to this point, and continued to lack a cutting edge. They created few, if any, clear cut chances, and what efforts they did have caused Chris Smith no problems in the Saints goal.

Saints, on the other hand, could have extended their lead when Shuggy fired over and Kean misheadered just wide. However, four minutes into the second half, the Saints were heading to the top of the SPL.

A Simon Lappin corner was met by Kevin McGowne. It looked to be going wide, but Paul Quinn got in the way and accidently diverted the ball into his own net. The Saints crowd didn't care how the ball had gone in, the important thing was that the lead had doubled.

Saints pushed for a third and could have got it when Sutton tried to lob Graeme Smith, only for him to see his shot parried and then smothered with kean rushing in. He had a few other efforts, whilst Brady fired straight at Smith.

Motherwell? Well, they were poor and could really struggle unless they improve. Long range shots won't work unless you're Charlie Adam, and it wasn't until it was too late they had a couple of even half chances. Saints rarely looked troubled, and the only possible disaster was when Craig Molloy should have been given a second booking, only for van Zanten to be booked instead.

Our spell at the top won't last for long, but we're there at the moment and a whopping six points above the 12th placed team. This league's easy!

We're top of the league and you're no :-)
