Saints 2-0 Inverness Caley Thistle

Best performance of the season? Probably. Rangers was good, but Saints were in control for most of the game this afternoon and, after a shaky start, they were rarely troubled by arguably the poorest SPL side to visit Love Street this season. Manager Craig Brewster was a man of few words after the game and you do wonder if he'll quit in the near future.

After the shock of scoring goals and winning a game last week, Saints boss Gus MacPherson kept faith in the same team. Early on it looked like a mistake, with Caley Thistle winning numerous corners. However, they failed to make them count and Ian Black's long range drive was all they could muster.

Saints weren't having much joy at the other end either. Dennis Wyness had a shot deflected behind while Jim Hamilton's cross nearly embarrassed Ryan Esson, who collided with the post as he tried to keep it out.

After 16 minutes, Saints took the lead in brilliant style. Dorman flicked the ball on for himself to run onto and beat Phil McGuire to it before advancing on goal. His recent mishaps disappeared as he cooly dispatched the ball past Esson to spark the now traditional chanting in the North Bank. Welcome back Andy, you've been missed.

That seemed to spark Caley Thistle into life, but only on a couple of occasions did they create anything meaningful. The first saw Richard Hasting's take advantage of Saints appealing for a free-kick by charging forward and crossing for Adam Rooney, who shot wide. The other incident came just before the break, Rooney hitting the side netting. In between times Brady had twice shot over, while a Caley Thistle striker had escaped a caution after a late challenge on Mark Howard.

Sixty seconds after the break Caley Thistle's chances were as good as over. Hamilton produced a superb cross from the left that the visiting defence had no chance of dealing with and Brady produced a Dorman-style late run to volley it past Esson.

That should have been that, but there were a few scares as Dougie Imrie and Don Cowie both went close for the visitors. After that, it was pretty much one way traffic, with Hamilton and Dorman in superb form. Dorman released Wyness, whose shot was saved by Esson, before Stephen McGinn shot wide after Esson failed to hold a corner.

Hamilton then missed a golden opportunity to wrap things up when he was picked out by Wyness after a great run from the former Caley Thistle striker, but he was too casual with his shot and Esson was able to block it. Such was Saints' dominance by this stage that even Franco Miranda was able to get forward to have a couple of shots before the end!

The only other incident of note was another collision involving a keeper, with Wyness and Esson running into each other as they chased a loose ball. It was accidental and Esson was able to continue after receiving treatment. Probably just as well, as Caley Thistle had used all their subs!

Saints hadn't used any, giving them the rare opportunity of taking players off so they could receive a standing ovation. Dorman and Hamilton were the lucky recipients, with Gary Mason and Craig Dargo replacing them on their return from injury.

It could, and probably should, have been a bigger win, but let's not get greedy - we've scored four goals in the last week which is almost a miracle for us! We've never won three SPL games in a row, can we manage that next week at Kilmarnock?
