Saints 1-3 Heart of Midlothian

Here at Mirren Mad, I usually don't blame the referee for defeat. Usually the players are a good enough target for that. However, while we lost, the performance this afternoon was fairly decent - especially considering some of the other dross at home in the last year or so. The performance of Underhill, however, was just bizarre and inconsistent.

Saints probably enjoyed the better of the first half, with Chris Birchall putting in some good crosses that no one was able to take advantage of. The returning Franco Miranda also produced some decent crosses, with Billy Mehmet and Will Haining failing to take advantage of the pair's efforts.

After half an hour, Stephen O'Donnell was tackled by Eggert Jonsson inside the box. The Hearts got nowhere near the ball, but Underhill didn't award a penalty. Fair enough.

Seven minutes from the break, a Michael Stewart corner found Andrew Driver, who's shot somehow went through Chris Smith. 1-0 Hearts, although David van Zanten appeared to have been pushed over when the ball was played in.

Just after the break Haining went off injured, replaced by Heart breaker Stewart Kean. Someone then decided to do Birchall's job for him, with the on-loan Coventry winger getting onto the end of Mehmet's cross, only for his header to hit a Hearts arm. Again, no penalty.

Hearts debutant Anthony Basso began making Artur Boruc's recent performances look sensational when he flapped at a Miranda free kick, but Kean screwed up the header. Less than sixty seconds later there was some comedy defending at the other end when Driver beat John Potter to the ball, rounded Smith but messed up his shot. Smith gathered the ball - then threw it to Michael Stewart. The former Manchester United youngster ran into the box and went down after being clipped by van Zanten. I have no argument with the penalty, despite what Vanzy says. It was a foul and it was in the box. What I do have a problem with is that Jonsson's challenge on O'Donnell, which took place in almost exactly the same spot, was far more worthy of punishment compared to that one. Whatever, Stewart smacked home the penalty.

Fortunately for us, Basso confirmed he is a muppet and his antics will be punished by better teams. Instead of dealing with a passback normally, ie booting the ball as far away as possible, he went for a wander. Except he lost the ball to Kean. Sadly, Kean fell over, but it was a sign of things to come.

Thirteen minutes from the end a Birchall corner was flapped at by Basso, but Kean's header was blocked. However, the ball went back to Birchall, who's next cross was met by sub Mark Corcoran to head past Basso and half the deficit. Game on.

A fine piece of time wasting by Calum Elliot, when he felt the need to tie his laces just yards from where a free kick was due to be taken, helped Hearts a bit, but five minutes after the Saints goal they wrapped things up. Sub Andrius Velicka was on the park for 28 seconds before scoring - being released by Driver before slotting the ball between Smith and his near post.

That was that. A decent Saints performance, particularly from Birchall, but a woeful one from John Underhill. However, he won't be punished - but expect anyone who challenges his terrible performances to be harshly fined.

On a side note, perhaps it's time for Chris Smith to be dropped. It could be argued the young keeper played a part in conceding all three goals, and it may be time for Mark Howard to be given a chance.
