Saints 1-3 Celtic

I'll come onto Artur Boruc's antics later. Somehow, despite playing well, we found ourselves three goals down before Jim Hamilton grabbed a late consolation goal. We should probably have been in front before Celtic scored but didn't really create a chance. Hopefully, this will show Gus MacPherson what can be achieved by playing two strikers.

The frontmen in question were Craig Dargo and Dennis Wyness. It was the partnership most Saints fans had wanted after last week's defeat at Ibrox and it worked well. Elsewhere, the injured Steven Robb and Gary Mason dropped out, with Stephen McGinn being handed a starting slot. Saints had major injury problems and the four midfielders that played were the only fit ones available!

Celtic went close early on when Scott McDonald shot wide after good work by Mark Wilson, while Andreas Hinkel had a shot saved by Mark Howard after he'd been played in by Georgios Samaras. At the other end, Franco Miranda went incredibly close to making Boruc look silly when he hit the woodwork directly from a corner.

After 14 minutes came the game's main talking point. Garry Brady played a ball for Dargo to run onto. He got to it just before the onrushing Boruc and played it past the Celtic keeper. Having done this, he was promptly flattened with an incredibly high kick from the Pole. Straight red card surely? Don't be silly - this is Celtic we're playing! As a result, he was only booked by Collum. How he came to this decision is a mystery. It wasn't a last man challenge - Celtic had two defenders back - but it was a shocking tackle. Had it been a defender - or Mark Howard - it would have been a straight red. Instead, Boruc escaped.

Celtic took a little bit of control after that, Samaras heading tamely at Howard before Scott Brown shot over when he should have hit the target from close range. Andy Dorman unleashed a powerful shot that went just wide for Saints but it was a rare attack. Collum continued to favour the visitors by awarding them two soft free-kicks, booking John Potter at the second. Fortunately, neither of them came to anything.

Despite all the favourable refereeing for Celtic, the scores were level at the interval. Saints came back out determined to overcome the blatant bias and dominated the opening exchanges after the restart. Miranda had a free-kick saved by Boruc before Dargo produced some neat skill in an attempt to set up Wyness, only for the ball to be cleared.

Despite all their dominance, Saints didn't really create a clear cut chance. It's a common problem and the inevitable happened just after the hour mark. Hinkel charged down the right wing unchallenged before crossing for the unmarked Samaras, who had timed his run to perfection, and he slotted Celtic into the lead.

Two minutes later it was game over. Shunsuke Nakamura was given far too much space - perhaps because our players were worried he'd dive if they went near him - and he easily beat Miranda before stroking the ball past Howard.

It was cruel for Saints and things got worse with ten minutes left in a comical goal. Will Haining tried to close down McDonald but stopped when he realised he wasn't getting there. As a result the Aussie had time to pick out Nakamura, whose cross was deflected back to McDonald. His shot was blocked, but all that did was give sub Cillian Sheridan an easy finish to put Celtic three goals clear.

Quite how they'd managed to get so far in front was a mystery considering our good play. There was something to cheer with two minutes to go when sub Hamilton headed home Miranda's cross, but it was scant consolation.

We deserved far more than we got today - in terms of the result and the decisions. Aside from Boruc's martial art antics, Celtic also seemed to get away with numerous handballs and received a number of dodgy decisions by getting away with some offences before receiving free-kicks when Saints players did exactly the same.

Despite the defeat, there is a lot to be positive about. Dargo and Wyness did well and if we play like that we should do well over the next few months. Fingers crossed we put in a similar performance against Dundee United next week.
