Saints 1-1 Falkirk

Not since May 2007 have we been given a penalty in a league game - and even then we missed it. So it was a bit of a shock to see referee Euan Norris point to the spot after Kevin McBride had handled in the box. Fortunately, this time we didn't miss it as Billy Mehmet converted it to give us an equaliser just moments after Falkirk had opened the scoring.

Unsurprisingly, Saints boss Gus MacPherson went with the same team that had beaten Inverness Caley Thistle last weekend. Jim Hamilton did well up north and was continuing his good form this afternoon, firing a powerful folley just wide and bringing a good save from Robert Olejnik with a header from Franco Miranda's free-kick.

Falkirk were rarely threatening but seemed to create the better chances on the few occasions they did get into the final third, with Graham Barrett heading a good chance wide from Thomas Scobbie's cross. However, for the most part it was Saints who were in control. Will Haining headed just wide, Scobbie tried to score an own goal and Mehmet shot just past the post after a good cross from Franco Miranda.

However, this is Saints we're talking about it so it would have been no surprise to find ourselves behind at the interval. We almost were, Michael Higdon bringing a good save from Mark Howard with a powerful shot before Scott Arfield missed a good chance when he failed to connect properly with a cross.

We'd escaped conceding before the break but that would last for just two minutes of the second half. Neil McCann was given space on the left to cross and the former Hearts man found Barrett, who powerfully headed past Howard to put Falkirk in front.

Usually getting in front is enough to beat us, but fortunately that didn't happen today as the lead lasted just two minutes. Saints were given a free-kick on the right and when Steven Robb crossed it in it was met by the hand of Kevin McBride. A run of 45 SPL games without a penalty was finally ended and Mehmet hammered it home.

From there Saints could, and perhaps should, have gone on to win. Olejnik stupidly threw the ball straight to Dorman, but he chipped it straight back to him. Hamilton had a volley blocked before he went down when challeneged by Olejnik, but neither a spot kick or a booking for diving were forthcoming. He also had another good volley on goal saved by the Falkirk keeper before being replaced with Craig Dargo, while Mehmet was soon replaced with Dennis Wyness.

It was Falkirk who finished the stronger, Scobbie stining the palms of Howard before the Bairns forced some corners in injury time that fortunately came to nothing. Indeed, they were arguably worse than our normal standard of corner which tells you all you need to know about them!

While we probably had more chances, Falkirk arguably had the better ones. A draw was probably a fair result but does make you wonder where our next home win is coming from - especially as the next game at Love Street is against Rangers!
