Saints 1-1 Alloa Athletic

Saints boss John Coughlin made a few changes to the side which drew 0-0 with Ayr United last weekend. Mark Roberts started instead of Simon Lappin, whilst Ricky Gillies replaced Paul McHale. Roberts was making his home debut along with Scott McLean, whilst Brian McGinty made his first home appearance for a few months.

Alloa started the game brighter and pressured the Saints defence, and Saints goalie Ludo Roy did not look to sure of himself. Despite having a fair number of corners in a row, however, Alloa didn't have a clear cut chance. Saints faired little better, but at least recorded some misses. Roberts forced the goalie into a good save, Mark Dempsie's header hit the outside of the post and McLean really should have done better after Hugh Murray made some good progress down the left.

Right on half time, Alloa took the lead which they deserved. They hadn't had many chances, but they had had the most possession and had pressured the most. Some shocking defending allowed Ross Hamilton to volley home a cross for 1-0. It wasn't looking good, as Saints had been very poor. Ricky Robb had had a terrible game at right back, a position he looks uncomfortable in despite playing for Rangers there. Ricky Gillies wasn't great in midfield, and provided his usual poor standard of corners when Saints got them.

The second half started in pretty similar fashion to the first, with Saints having a few chances but Alloa having the better of the play. McLean missed a great chance midway through the half, when he should have smashed the ball home but instead tried to chip the keepr, despite the fact the Alloa goalie was two feet in front of him! McGinty was replaced by McHale, whilst Lappin replaced Ally Mitchell. Alloa had a few chances, and Roy again looked unsure in goal.

With just over 10 minutes to go, Saints got an equaliser they barely deserved. A pass luckily found it's way through to Roberts, who hit a shot on goal. The ball took a huge deflection off an Alloa player's leg and flew into the corner of the net, much to the relief of the Saints support. It remains to be seen whether this officially counts as Roberts first goal for Saints, but he didn't celebrate as if it was.

A few minutes later Saints could have been ahead, when a free kick was swung in and Greig Denham headed home. It was half a minute before Denham and the team realised the referee had disallowed the goal for a shove, or climbing on someone, and I have to admit there did look to be some sort of foul.

A few more minutes later and the Alloa goalie was booked for handling outside the box. He was lucky not to have been booked for the large amount of time wasting he carried out, but Saints couldn't take advantage from the free kick.

Saints held out for the remainder of the game, taking a point they did not deserve. Boss Coughlin admitted after the game we were dreadful, and we'll have to improve greatly if we are to break our Brockville curse against Falkirk next week.
