Saints 1-0 Ross County

Chris Smith made his debut in goals thanks to Craig Hinchcliffe being injured, whilst John Baird started up front. Allan Russell was in the main stand after rejecting a contract offer earlier in the week.

This was a fairly boring game so let's cut to the chase. Saints could have been ahead with just over ten minutes gone, when Hugh Murray's cross was knocked on by Kirk Broadfoot and Andy Millen headed into the net. Sadly, the linesman decided he was offside.

Saints did take the lead into half time, David van Zanten scoring at the third attempt after his previous two efforts had been blocked by the County defence. Broadfoot's cross fell to him, and after the County keeper and a defender got in the way DVZ buried his first of the season.

That was enough to win it, with Baird and Stewart Kean both going extremely close in the second half.

Ricky Gillies could have grabbed a fairytale last minute goal after coming on as a sub. van Zanten's cross was perfect but just too fair away for the flying Gillies to connect with. A pity as it would have been nice for him to sign off with a goal.

Ricky left the pitch to a standing ovation and I was lucky enough to shake his hand afterwards and wish him good luck thanks to being on duty for the official Saints site.

You'll be missed Ricky, but it's time you moved on. All the best.
