Saints 1-0 Hamilton Academical

With just over half the season gone, we now find ourselves seven points above the relegation spot. We're in eighth place - a point behind Kilmarnock and two behind Hibs. After the nightmare of November, the delight of December has seen us close to within a couple of points of a place in the top six!

Jim Hamilton shrugged off his injury worries to start and ensure it was once again the same team that started. Things should have been a lot easier for Saints in the opening minutes when Dennis Wyness' shot was parried by Tomas Cerny straight to Andy Dorman. The midfielder is in superb form at the moment but somehow managed to head over the open goal.

Hamilton were perhaps boosted by that let off and threatened themselves when Simon Mensing hit the side netting before Richard Offiong had a shot blocked by Mark Howard after a ball was chipped over the defence for him to chase.

After that, Saints began to exert some pressure of their own. Hugh Murray missed the target with a few shots before Garry Brady had an effort deflected just wide of goal. In the dying moments of the half Wyness did well to send Dorman through, but the angle got too tight for him and he shot just wide.

Offiong went close for the Accies just after the break, but after that it was all Saints. Wyness and Stephen McGinn went close before Dorman had a long range effort turned behind by Cerny. That seemed to signal the start of a Saints' cavalry charge but, despite plenty of play around the six yard box, they only had a tame effort from Wyness to show for their efforts. He was replaced by Dargo soon after - a change that worked wonders.

With 12 minutes left Dorman burst through the midfield. With the crowd screaming at him to pass it to Jack Ross, he held onto it for what seemed like forever before picking out the former Falkirk fullback. Ross' cross was absolutely perfect and Dargo arrived bang on cue to put the ball past Cerny. The striker has had a horrendous time since he signed for us, but his goal today may go someway to making up for that.

Shuggy went close to sealing the points with a shot from a ridiculous distance that fizzed just wide. Hamilton - who mysteriously cut out the time wasting tactics they had used when the scores were level - tried to respond by throwing on some strikers but could only threaten with a few long range shots. Late on, it looked as if the lead had been doubled when Dargo rolled the ball back for Billy Mehmet to score, but the ball had already gone out of play.

December has been better than most of us could realistically have thought of - four wins from four games is a fantastic return, especially when you consider how bad things were at the end of November. Love Street is getting the send off it deserves - fingers crossed we can make it five from five to round things off next week.
