Saints 0-1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle

It was a performance like so many others this season, with Saints failing to trouble the visiting goalkeeper for much of the game. There's no point getting annoyed about things though - the events of last week had ensured this would probably be a typical, end of season game - and so it proved to be. Had things been different last week, today's match would have been anything but a meaningless kick about.

There were a few changes to last week's team, with John Sutton, Billy Mehmet and Eddie Malone all starting in place of Stewart Kean, Alex Burke and John Potter dropping out.

It was a poor game and it's the end of the season so I'm not going to spend too much time going into the details. Saints had a few chances in the first half from crosses, but put them well wide. Alan Reid had a shot which was saved by Michael Fraser, while Sutton went close with a few chances.

Caley Thistle were by far the better side and could have been a couple up had it not been for some poor finishing. Craig Dargo had the best chance, dragging the ball wide when he should at least have hit the target.

Their dominance continued after the break, and if it hadn't been for Chris Smith and poor finishing they'd have won comfortably. However, ironically, the only goal came from a Smith mistake - he came for a cross, should have dealt with it but McCaffrey got their first and nodded it over him and in.

The typical "We're behind and at home" cavalry charge started from Saints, with substitute Burke taking too long over a shot when he should have scored allowing Fraser to save for a corner. From that, Sutton forced a great save from Fraser before Maxwell headed tamely into his arms.

That was the best chance Saints had, and Caley Thistle ran out deserved winners. Kirk Broadfoot got a good reception at the end of his final game for Saints, but how many others - such as Sutton and Mehmet - will we see playing for us again?

The season is over and now the real fun and games begin. Who's staying? Who's going? Who are we signing? Who are we playing in friendlies?

It's going to be an interesting time until it all starts again on August 4.
