Saints 0-1 Ayr United

This result is nothing short of embarrassing. Yes, Ayr have already put out Inverness Caley Thistle and Hearts but that was at Somerset Park. At home, we should have been going through. Instead we are out and have another entry to the long list of embarrassing cup defeats at the hands of lower league sides over the past few years.

Danny Lennon really needs to have a long, hard look at the insistence on playing passing football and his 4-3-3/4-5-1 system. The BBC site shows we had more thn 60 per cent possession, but what good is that if you can't do anything with it? Ayr sat deep in the first half and we couldn't break them down with our passing.

Things opened up a bit in the second half but we couldn't make it count and former Morton man Smith headed in a free-kick from ex Saint Eddie Malone with 10 minutes left. We pushed for an equaliser, Thompson hitting the bar in the final minute, but it couldn't come and we can have no complaints.

Disgraceful. The sad thing is it's not really a shock, because we all knew there was a fair chance of it happening.
