Motherwell 3-1 Saints

The stats make for grim reading. Apparently this is our worst start to a season in 77 years and the joint worst start in our history. We are bottom of the league, haven't won away in the league since last October and have lost our last four games. Things are looking grim.

There's no disgrace in losing away to Motherwell, who are third, but it's the way we did it. Going a goal down after three minutes is criminal. To level things up and then ship another two goals in the last three minutes is unacceptable. If I'm honest, I've already resigned myself to the prospect of relegation and find our current plight laughable.

An injury to Paul Gallacher ruled him out, so Craig Samson was handed his debut in goals. Also starting was Patrick Cregg, while Michael Higdon returned. Out went Nick Hegarty and Sean Lynch. Yes folks, after criticising the defence for two weeks solid, Danny Lennon once again went with the same players.

We couldn't have got off to a worse possible start. A slip from Cregg let in Chris Humphrey and he readily took advantage of the error to score. Motherwell dominated the first half and should have been out of sight, although Higdon hit the bar and Wardlaw missed another decent chance.

Saints improved after the break and in the 64th minutes Wardlaw grabbed his first goal since signing in the summer with a neat turn and finish. It then looked as if we'd get a point, or even win, before disaster. With three minutes left, Samson slipped going for a back pass and the useless Lee Mair gave away a penalty by fouling Allan Gow. Tom Hateley scored from the spot and a minute later Jamie Murphy scored again to kill off any hope we had.

Why on earth did we go with the same defence again? And why were no subs used? Why were no strikers on the bench? Despite that, we nearly ended up with a draw.

Lennon and co have a lot of thinking to do before our next game against Hamilton in a fortnight.
