Dundee United 3-4 Saints

No, I have not been on the Christmas sherry or the egg nog. The above paragraph is accurate. We did indeed score four goals while conceding three and David van Zanten did indeed get the winner - his first Saints goal in more than six years!

It's a terrific result and sees us go 12 points above Dundee, who have a game in hand, and just three away from a place in the top six. Seven points from the three festive games so far is a terrific return and it can get even better if we can put in another good display against Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

There were changes galore for Saints as Jim Goodwin and Marc McAusland returned from suspension, with Lewis Guy and Paul Dummett also returning. Out went David Barron, Dougie Imrie, Graham Carey and Lee Mair.

Proof that the changes were working arrived after just a quarter of an hour as Dummett appeared at the back post to tap home a cross from Gary Teale. However, he blotted his copybook just before the break when he was deemed to have pushed Jon Daly inside the box and the striker scored the resultant penalty. Incredibly, there was still time for things to get worse before the interval as Stuart Armstrong cracked one in from long range to put United in front.

It was a huge blow, but thankfully we were level within five minutes of the restart when Steven Thompson pounced on some slack defending to score. More poor defending saw McAusland lash in his first goal in over a year from a Teale free-kick and when Brian McLean was sent off for a lunge on John McGinn we looked home and dry.

And 10 minutes from time it really did look like game over when Vanzy's cross come shot found its way into the net. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, not least the defender as he can now avoid the end of season Vankini forfeit for not scoring.

That should have been that, but with Saints it never is and at the start of stoppage time Barry Douglas fired in a free-kick to reduce the deficit. Thankfully, we saw the game out and not even Rudi Skacel could stop us taking all three points.
