Ayr United 1-0 Saints

I wasn't there and, from reading forums and Twitter, it's probably just as well as it wasn't an exciting match. New signings Paul McGowan and Nigel Hasselbaink started, with Graham Smith, Gary Teale and Graham Carey on the bench. A strain kept Steven Thompson out, while the trialist leftback started.

There was an early blow for Saints when David van Zanten had to be stretchered off after just a few minutes after what was apparently a fair challenge from an Ayr man. Hopefully he's not too bad.

In a poor game, Paul McGowan hit the post in the second half before a scramble allowed Roddy Paterson to put Ayr in front. The same man hit the woodwork late on but there were to be no more goals.

Not the best of starts, but results don't matter. The main worry is the injury to Vanzy.
