The Road to Hampden: Part Four

Last updated : 17 March 2010 By Stuart Gillespie

Since the SPL was formed, we've scored three goals in games against top flight sides on six occasions. Amusingly, five of them have been against Motherwell! After drawing with them the Saturday before this one we had to make a change as Tom Brighton was badly injured so Michael Higdon starting, with Allan Johnston also coming in to put in another anonymous performance.

We seemed to control much of the match from my vantage point (in the pub) and I got a nice surprise when I got up to go to the loo and so on Soccer Special that Michael Higdon had put us in front midway through the first half. Turned out we'd scored from a set-piece - a rarity in itself.

Paul Gallacher kept out an effort from Jamie Murphy before Jack Ross doubled our lead midway through the second half when he burst forward and drove in a cross that was deflected past John Ruddy.

If there was doubts over whether or not that was an own goal, there was no question about the third when Andy Dorman drove forward and his cross took a mighty whack off of Stephen Craigan.

Hampden should have been calling, but Hearts shock win over Celtic the following night meant we'd be playing the Jambos on the moon (well, Fir Park) on a February night. And what a night it proved to be...
