Millennium Champions: Still top - just

Written by Stuart Gillespie
Friday, 5th February 2010
After an encouraging draw against SPL basement boys Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup, spirits were high ahead of a game against Livingston at Love Street. It wasn't to last.

The cup was probably playing a bit too much on everyone's minds. If we won the replay after the Livingston game, we would face the winners of Celtic and Inverness Caley Thistle in the next round. It would be an away game and would be live on Sky, meaning a massive financial boost for the club - especially as it would almost certainly be Celtic we would face. Massive win bonuses were on offer for the game at Pittodrie and the players seemed to spend most of their Saturday afternoons thinking about it.

It was a dismal performance and Livvy took the lead after half an hour when David Bingham managed to outjump Sergei Baltacha - despite a height difference of around half a foot - to send a looping header past Ludovic Roy. To make things worse, Tom Brown got himself sent off with a stupid tackle just before half time. Amusingly, the referee was also called Tom Brown. Brian McPhee wrapped things up in the second half with a well taken goal as we struggled to get a shot on goal all day.

Due to results elsewhere, we were only top on goal difference. The win bonus didn't have the desired effect as we lost at Aberdeen the same night super Caley went ballistic at Parkhead, meaning the next round clash wouldn't have been worth as much anyway.

So, with the cup dream over, it was time to focus on the league - and it was Caley Thistle we faced next.
