Millennium Champions: End of the run

Last updated : 08 December 2009 By Stuart Gillespie

We'd threatened to run away with things, but as this is Saints that was never going to happen. We did at least have some excuses for not making it to nine in a row. For starters, the Caledonian Stadium is jinxed for us - we have rarely won there and often concede four goals. Secondly, we had injuries. As if being without Hugh Murray and Ian Ross wasn't bad enough, we were without Ludovic Roy. That meant Derek Scrimgour was handed his first appearance since Tony Fitzpatrick had been booted out a year ago.

Still, there were no initial signs we weren't going to continue our winning ways and just before half time the ever reliable Mark Yardley put us in front from a Gary Bowman free-kick.

It was to be another set-piece after the break that proved our downfall. When someone called Dennis Wyness (whatever happened to him?) was fouled, Barry Wilson somehow managed to put the free-kick through the wall before Scrimmy palmed it in, showing just why he hadn't played for 12 months!

We went looking to restore our lead but, unlike the recent wins over Clydebank and Falkirk, it failed to materialise. Sergei Baltacha hit the woodwork and Yards was denied by veteran Jim Calder.

These days we'd probably be quite happy with a point from a trip to Inverness, but considering the run we'd been on it was disappointing. However, things would get far worse the following week when Ayr United came to Paisley.
