Millennium Champions: Derby delight

Everyone was on a high after the hammering of Clydebank a week before but Tom Hendrie decided to go with a rather odd formation, which included Barry Lavety, Junior Mendes, Mark yardley and Steven McGarry. Not for the first time, Mendes looked disinterested, but it was Basher who got the hook at half time.

After a dull first half, things got exciting when Morton had Craig McPherson sent off for flattening Junior. Then, with 12 minutes left, McGarry hit a shot off the bar and Yards pounced to fire the rebound over the line - just. The Morton players were convinced Ally Maxwell had saved it and charged about complaining - with manager Ian McCall later sent to the stand. Pictures later showed that it was indeed a goal.

With five minutes left McGarry put the game beyond doubt, beautifully placing a shot into the top corner after some fine work from Mendes. Job done - except Scott Walker managed to get himself a second booking for kicking the ball away. After full time. Hmm.

There were just seven games left now and the nerves seemed to be growing because of what was at stake. At no time would that be more evident than the following week, when we returned to Cappielow to face Clydebank.
