Who's been here before?

Obviously the League Challenge Cup in 2005 helps a few players, but even though I've not included the Renfrewshire Cup there's still a wealth of experience of such games. Below are the results (gathered from Soccerbase and Wikipedia) in squad number order, with the management team right at the end. It is assumed that youth players such as Sean Burns and Ben Carson haven't featured in a semi-final or final yet.

Chris Smith: Obviously won't play due to injury, which is perhaps just as well - his last trip to Hampden was in the Youth Cup Final in 2005 when he carried the ball across the line for a goal! Made up for it the following season with a superb display in the penalty shoot out against Morton in the League Challenge Cup semi-final and did the business in the final.

Jack Ross: First ever trip to Hampden. Only cup final experience was in the juniors with Camelon in 1996 when they lost, although played for Falkirk when they were beaten by Kilmarnock in the League Cup semis in 2007.

Franco Miranda: Unlikely to play. No idea about his cup experience in Argentina or Sweden.

Gary Mason: Played the in the Scottish Cup semi-finals for Dunfermline in 2007 (although missed the final), the League Cup final defeat to Celtic in 2006 and the Scottish Cup final to Celtic in 2004. Just as well it's the other half of the Old Firm we're playing!

Will Haining: Only semi-finals he's played in before were the play-offs with Oldham. Oh, and the Football League Trophy Northern Final, which they lost.

John Potter: First trip to Hampden for him as a player. Featured in the League Challenge Cup semi-final and final for Saints in 2005.

Hugh Murray: The only surviving member of the Saints side that last visited Hampden in the League Cup in 2001. Also played in the League Challenge Cup semi-finals in 2002 and 2005, winning the trophy in '05.

Andy Dorman: Surely no surprise to find out that Mr Dorman has done things better than most of our other players as he won the US Cup with New England Revolution in 2007. Also lost three successive MLS Cup finals - the MLS equivalent of the SuperBowl.

Billy Mehmet: Another who featured for Saints in the semi-final and final of the League Challenge Cup in 2005. An unused sub for Dunfermline in the 2004 Scottish Cup semi-finals and final.

Dennis Wyness: Played in the Scottish Cup semi-final for Inverness Caley Thistle in 2003 and for Hearts in 2004, both games which ended in defeat. Other big cup experience includes playing, and scoring, for Hearts in the UEFA Cup in 2004.

Tonet: Who knows? Who cares?

Stephen O'Donnell: Played in the League Challenge Cup semi-final and final for Clyde in 2006, losing the latter to Ross County on penalties. Also played against Celtic in the League Cup semi-final for Dundee United back in 2003.

Garry Brady: Played in the Scottish Cup final for Dundee in 2003, losing to Rangers, and lost in the semi-finals to Gretna three years later. Also lost to Livingston in the League Cup semis in 2004. Not a great record! Has also played in the UEFA Cup.

Tom Brighton: Unlikely to play. No first team experience of semi-finals or finals - although it would be a surprise if he hasn't featured in such a game while in the youth ranks at Rangers.

Steven Robb: Unlikely to play. Lost to Gretna in the Scottish Cup semis in 2006.

Craig Dargo: Has experience of scoring at Hampden in a game involving Saints - unfortunately it was a screamer against us for Kilmarnock in 2001! Played in that year's final, which Killie lost to Celtic. Has also played in the UEFA Cup.

Jim Hamilton: The only member of the playing squad to have won the Scottish Cup, his moment of glory coming with Hearts in 1998 when they beat Rangers (although it wasn't at Hampden), having also played in their semi-final against Falkirk. Unsurprisingly, his long career has seen him play in several semis and finals. He played in the League Challenge Cup semi and final for Dunfermline in 2007, having played for them in the final of the Scottish Cup the previous year. Both runs ended in failure. There was a League Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic while playing for Motherwell in 2006 and another while with Dundee United a few years earlier in 2003. Going even further back, he also featured in the League Cup semi-final for Hearts in 1996 and the final in 1995, which they lost to Aberdeen. There may be more, but Soccerbase doesn't go any further back! Also has a fair amount of European experience.

David Barron: First trip to Hampden, although I'm not sure if he was with us when the under-19s made the Youth Cup final in 2005. If not, it's his first ever semi-final.

Marc McAusland: Another first timer - and I'm fairly sure he wasn't part of the Youth Cup finalists of 2005. If that's the case, it's the first time he's made it to the last four of a cup competition.

Mark Howard: First appearance for a first team in a semi-final or final, although he was an unused sub for Arsenal in the 2005 Community Shield. Would be a surprise if he didn't feature in a final for one of their youth teams.

Stephen McGinn: First trip to Hampden, first semi-final. Almost certain he wasn't involved in the 2005 Youth Cup final.

Ryan McCay: Played in the Youth Cup final in 2005 - but there's more chance of me getting a game on Saturday than him.

Mo Camara: Has already won a semi-final against the odds this season as he was part of the Derby side that beat Man Utd in the League Cup (although they lost the second leg, in which he didn't feature). Played for Celtic in the League Cup semi-final in 2006 and was also part of their amusing Champions League exit the same season (sorry Mo!). Featured in Wolves' play-off semi-finals in 2002, although not the final. No idea if he won anything in France - but he has won 79 caps for Guinea.

Paul Mathers: Featured for Peterhead in the play-offs in 2006, where they were denied promotion by a last minute goal. Played for Falkirk in the League Challenge Cup semi-final and final in 1997, lifting the trophy against Queen of the South.

Scott Cuthbert: Nothing for a first team but has surely won a cup with Celtic's youth or reserve sides. Captained the Scotland under-19 side when they made the final of the European Championships at that level in 2005, losing to Spain.

Steven Thomson: Played for the Crystal Palace side that beat Liverpool in the first leg of the League Cup semi in 2001, although was also in the team when they were gubbed at Anfield in the second leg.

Gus MacPherson: First Scottish Cup semi-final as a manager, although guided the club to the League Challenge Cup in 2005. As a player, he won the Scottish Cup with Kilmarnock in 1997, also playing in the semi, and also featured for them when they beat us at Hampden in 2001 before losing the final to Celtic. Also made it to the same stage a year earlier. Plenty of European experience too.

Andy Millen: First Scottish Cup semi-final in a coaching role. Featured in the League Challenge Cup semi final and final for Saints in 2005 as player/assistant manager. Played in the semi-final of the same competition for Clyde in 2001, but lost. Won the competition twice with Hamilton earlier in his career and has also been capped for the Scotland B team. His career is so long there's probably a few other semi-finals and finals in there I've missed!

Stuart Balmer: First game of this sort as a coach, although played against us while player/assistant manager of Hamilton in the 2005 League Challenge Cup final (having also featured in the semi-final). Won the Football League Trophy with Wigan Athletic in 1999, having also played in the regional final, and also featured in their play-off semi-finals the same season. May well have played in semi-finals or finals during his time as a youth player with Celtic.

So there you have it - I'm sure you'll agree it's a fairly extensive record, and I'm not just talking about Jim Hamilton. Will some of them have another big cup game to look forward to after Saturday?
