Know the Ref - Rangers away

Mr Somers officiated our game against Hamilton Accies in November which we won 2-1 - the last time we scored a goal or took all three points. He was also in charge of our first home game of the season against Kilmarnock, which finished goalless.

To continue this positive run, the only Saints game he took charge of us last year saw us record a 2-0 win over Gretna at Love Street. Sadly, the only other game of ours he has been involved in since our return to the SPL was a 2-0 defeat to Falkirk in 2007.

Delving further back, he was in charge of a match away to Raith Rovers in the early part of 2004/05 that we won 3-0 (three goals!) and even gave us a penalty. Sadly, the only other recent game I can find was the last match of 2002/03, when we were hammered by Alloa.

It's when you get back to 2000/01 that things get more interesting. While he took charge of a 2-0 defeat to Easter Road at Hibs, he was also involved in a 2-1 win over Dundee at Love Street. This game amusingly saw Juan Sara sent off for two bookings - revealing a T-shirt when he scored and a stupid handball. This match also ended a poor run of form for Saints - another omen?

The only other match of ours I can find on Soccerbase is also notable. It is a 2-0 win over Morton at Cappielow as we began our run-in to the first division title in 2000. Mark Yardley was awarded a controversial goal that the Morton players didn't think had crossed the line, they had Craig McPherson sent off and we had Scott Walker red carded after the game for booting the ball into the stand in celebration!

If Soccerbase is to be believed - and it probably isn't - the only time Mr Somers has previously taken charge of a game against Rangers was back in 2001/02, which they won 2-0. I find it difficult to accept he hasn't officiated a match involving them since then.

The controversial incidents involving Saints and Mr Somers were a long time ago. The fact he was the man in the middle when we last won is hopefully a good thing and hopefully something we can repeat tomorrow.
