Know the Ref - Hearts semi-final

Mr Richmond was the man in the middle when we put Celtic out of the Scottish Cup last season, giving us a penalty when Craig Dargo was flattened by Stephen McManus - although he failed to send the Celtic defender off. That was his only Saints game last season, and his only one this season was another home game against Celtic. That time we lost 2-0, Scott McDonald being allowed to score the second despite looking offside.

Strangely, Mr Richmond only did one Saints game in 2007/08 - and once again it was against Celtic! It was another good result for us as Stephen McGinn almost gave us a shock win at Parkhead before we conceded a late equaliser.

2006/07 was the last time this official was in charge of our games on a more regular basis - five in total. Interestingly, one was a 2-2 draw against Tuesday's opposition Hearts and he amusingly sent off Paul Hartley that day. He also took charge of a League Cup clash over Stenhousemuir, sending off one of their players and a Scottish Cup defeat to Dundee United, where we lost in the fourth minute of stoppage time despite only three being indicated. The other games were a draw at Dunfermline and a defeat to Rangers.

Back in the title winning season, Mr Richmond took charge of no fewer than six of our games. Two of those were the infamous Spartans affair, where he didn't seem to know the under-1 rule when asked about it. The others include a 2-1 win over St. Johnstone in Perth - Craig Hinchcliffe perhaps fortunate not to be sent off when conceding a penalty - a 0-0 draw with Dundee and a win over Queen of the South, where Charlie Adam scored in stoppage time. The missing match was a 2-1 win over Clyde where we had a penalty given when Charlie Adam was fouled, only for Graham Roberts to come out whining afterwards. Stephen O'Donnell was also sent off for the Bully Wee in that game.

The previous season saw Mr Richmond take charge of just three Saints games - and we won them all. Two were straightforward wins over Raith Rovers and Ross County. The other was a 2-1 win over St. Johnstone, where three Fake Saints players managed to be sent off. The games the previous season weren't quite so successful - a defeat to Queens and a draw with Falkirk. 2002/03 was even worse - defeats to Falkirk and Celtic, although there was a win over Queen of the South. The Falkirk match was his first involving Saints.

So far this season, Mr Richmond has taken charge of just one Hearts game - the recent Edinburgh derby at Easter Road, which ended in a draw. He sent off a player from each side after they seemed to have a handbags moment. Last season he did four Hearts games, including a fine draw at Parkhead. Also in there are wins over Aberdeen and Kilmarnock, as well as a defeat to Hibs where each team had a player sent off once more. On that occasion it was the Hearts keeper.

Another Edinburgh derby in 2007/08 ended in a draw and no red cards. Also that season was a draw with Falkirk and wins over Motherwell and Gretna, who had a man sent off. The previous season saw another five matches for Mr Richmond, including the Saints game mentioned above. Again, there's an Edinburgh derby that finished in a draw and saw Hearts reduced to 10 men, as well as a cup hammering of 10 man Alloa, a win against Dundee United with a penalty and a draw against Rangers at Ibrox.

2005/06 was a great season for Hearts and they won three games with Mr Richmond in charge - against Dundee United, Motherwell and Dunfermline (who had a man sent off). The other game was an Edinburgh derby and it saw Hibs win. The previous season wasn't quite so good from a Hearts perspective as, with this official, they drew with Livingston and Dunfermline and lost at Ibrox. Things were a bit better in 2003/04; as well as two draws with Motherwell, there is a win over Dundee United but a defeat to Dunfermline. Mr Richmond's first Hearts game was in 2002/03, a straightforward 3-0 win at Tannadice.

Mr Richmond did one of last season's League Cup semi-finals, Rangers beating Falkirk at Hampden. In 2006/07 he did a Scottish Cup semi-final, with Celtic beating St. Johnstone, but these two matches seem to be his only ones so far in the latter stages of cup competitions. His most recent cup action was the two games involving Rangers and Hamilton in the Scottish Cup recently, the Gers benefiting from the usual soft penalty when they were losing the first game.

Both sides seem to have a reasonable record with Mr Richmond in charge and it's worth noting he's shown four red cards in his last five games - one of them to a Hearts player.
