Saints v Stenhousemuir Preview

As things stand, it looks extremely likely that Saints striker John Baird will be starting for Stenhousemuir. Baird is currently enjoying a loan spell with the Ochilview side and has scored four goals in four games. Stenny boss Des McKeown believes that Baird will be allowed to play as he has yet to hear anything from Saints to the contrary.

Considering how often our former players come back to score against us (Alex Bone anyone?), Saints boss Gus MacPherson must be crazy if he wants to let one of our current players play against us, especially when he is on such good form at the moment. If Baird plays, the chances are he will score.

Even if Baird doesn't play, The Warriors still have a few players who can cause us problems. Striker David Templeton is highly rated and several top clubs north and south of the border are apparently tracking his progress. Falkirk recently had a small offer for him refused, but it will surely only be a matter of time before he moves on.

After the fun we had in the League Challenge Cup against Stenhousemuir last season, when we were 3-0 up only for the score to be 3-2 at half time, it'll be interesting to see how Gus approaches the game. He may choose to give the likes of Richard Brittain and Billy Mehmet a chance to impress, or he could play it safe (which he probably will) and go with the same side that has started three of our four SPL games to date.

Some Saints fans claim they aren't too bothered about this competition and wouldn't mind too much if we lost, but I disagree. If we were playing another SPL side, or a top first division side, then fair enough. However, if we lose tonight it will be to a third division side, which would be incredibly embarrassing. That reason alone should be enough to see the Saints players and staff approach this professionally and avoid a repeat of the Forfar humiliation from two years ago.
