Saints v Saints Preview

Last updated : 16 December 2005 By Stuart Gillespie
Last week's scoreline was a bit of a shock, especially when you consider how bad Dundee are and how good our form has been in the past few weeks. However, that's behind us now and the Battle of the Saints prevents us with the perfect opportunity to start another good run of form.

St. Mirren have two injury problems ahead of tomorrow's game. Craig Hinchcliffe is out, obviously, whilst striker (and I use the term loosely) Brian McGinty is also out for a while after picking up an injury in a midweek reserve win against Stenhousemuir. Considering McGinty has failed to score a goal of any kind since November 2004, this may seem like no great loss, or indeed good news if you're someone like me. However, we could have done with him tomorrow. St. Johnstone have the rather tall Kevin James in defence, and whilst he is good in the air, he's useless on the ground. Having someone like McGinty on the bench to run at him for the last half an hour would have been ideal, although Mark Corcoran could also fill that role.

There is some confusion over whether Kirk Broadfoot is suspended for tomorrow or not. It was expected that he would be, however the SFA mailing list says otherwise. If he is suspended, it is likely that former St. Johnstone player Ian Maxwell will take his place, although it is possible that we could revert to a back four.

Andy Millen is set to make his 800th senior appearance tomorrow if he plays at any stage, which will be an impressive milestone. The 40 year old started his career at tomorrow's opponents nearly twenty years ago, and is still extremely fit. It is likely he will start tomorrow, so well done Andy!

St. Johnstone seem to have patches of good form broken up with a bad result, like a silly draw against someone not very good. When they play well, they are very good and have had the likes of Steven Milne and Jason Scotland banging in the goals for them this season. Their midfielders are also capable of scoring, with Paul Sheerin and Ryan Stevenson having impressive tallies for the season so far. It seems that the Fake Saints are dangerous across the pitch, so we'll need to watch out.

A few people have asked me in recent weeks why it seems that I always predict we lose. This has come as a shock, as it means that people read my previous. There are a few reasons I do it that I can't be bothered going in to, one being it's a superstition. Anyway, I really do think we'll lose tomorrow after last week's hammering and the good form of the Fakes, so my prediction is for a 1-0 win for the visitors.
