Saints v Motherwell Preview

Last updated : 12 January 2007 By Stuart Gillespie
A win for Saints tomorrow will lift them up a place in the table, and if Falkirk also win it would mean we were 12 points clear of the Pars at the bottom. With only 14 games left after tomorrow, that would be exceptionally good news. However, Dunfermline beat Rangers last week so we shouldn't take a Falkirk win for granted.

Saints were inactive last week and so will have enjoyed an extended break after the heavy winter period. This is good, as it has allowed a few injuries to clear up whilst the virus has finally disappeared. Stewart Kean, Alex Burke and Iain Anderson are all back in training, although it's unlikely any of the three will make the squad.

Craig Molloy, Hugh Murray, Brian McGinty and Billy Mehmet are all out, but the rest of the squad should be fit - with Simon Lappin hopefully returning after his recent head injury. Sadly, it doesn't appear there will be any new signings ahead of tomorrow's match. Two youngsters from Newcastle United played in a bounce match with Clyde during the week, but neither has yet signed a loan deal. Hopefully the lack of signing activity means that Mark Corcoran will once again be unleashed on the Steelmen after his excellent showing against them in the Scottish Cup last year.

Motherwell, on the other hand, signed three players from the Irish league the day the transfer opened, and are no doubt hoping to sign a few more players before the end of January. Whether they'll be good enough to help them avoid the relegation battle is anyone's guess. Former Saint Steven McGarry is still at Fir Park, although he seems to have been moved into midfield since his time at Love Street.

With us still missing a few players, and no new signings at the time of writing, I think Motherwell will edge this match 1-0.
