Saints v Motherwell Preview

By my reckoning, no SPL side has been to Love Street, friendlies aside, since our relegation from the SPL foyr years ago. Sure, we've played a few SPL sides in cups, but those games were away from home, so tonight's match should be an exciting one and will provide a rare chance for us to test ourselves against an SPL side.

Saints have the usual injury worries, with Mark Reilly and Ryan McCan both definitely out. Craig Hinchcliffe was on the bench on Saturday, but has only begun training this week and will probably remain there, whilst there is an outside chance that Kevin McGowne could be back in defence. Brian McGinty might also make it to the bench, but despite all this I'd reckon Saints boss Gus MacPherson will go with the same lineup that has beaten both Stenhousemuir and Clyde in the past seven days.

This means that recent signing John Sutton will continue up front, which is good as the former Spurs and Millwall man has done well, scoring twice in three games. Clearly the more talented of the Sutton brothers (ahem), if he stays fit he'll play a big part in our season. He seems to be linking up well with Stewart Kean, and also Billy Mehmet when he comes off the bench. Hopefully this will continue.

Motherwell have had a mixed start to the season, as they seem to be able to both score and concede at will. This is best proven by a 4-4 draw with Celtic and a 5-4 defeat against Dundee United! On Saturday they hammered Falkirk 5-0, let's just hope they've got all their goals out of their system before tonight! Jim Hamilton will supposedly miss out with injury, as will several others, but this could just be Motherwell boss Terry Butcher playing the mind games.

Prediction? Our defence is shaky at times so if Motherwell are in the mood I reckon they could win 3-0, although we might sneak a consolation goal at some stage.
