Saints v Morton Preview

Let's get this bit out of the way early. I don't care for the Renfrewshire Cup. It is a glorified friendly. It meant little when it used to be an end of season game and even less when we were thumping/narrowly avoiding embarrassment in finals against the likes of Viewfield Rovers. It is only held in pre-season to generate a bit of ca sh for both teams. It creates potential for injuries and suspensions to be picked up in a game that, essentially, means very little. I love beating Morton in proper games but, even though there is a trophy at stake, I'm not bothered whether we win or lose this one.

Right, that's enough of that. We're currently on 50 Renfrewshire Cup victories and Morton are one ahead. With this being the first game between the two sides, there should be a bit of extra needle - completely unnecessary this close to the season (oops, I said the rant was over, that won't happen again). In the past we've fielded trialists in this game, but that doesn't seem likely tonight. It seems a few players have knocks, including Hugh Murray, and they are unlikely to be risked. Other players seem to be lacking match fitness and it looks almost certain Steven Robb will start to get some practice in - can he last the full game or will he get injured before then? If nothing else, those going tonight (and, despite the above rant, I'm one of them) can look forward to the rare sight of seeing Tom Brighton in action. Trialist Ross Harvey is expected to be given a run out at some point and could start the match.

Morton fans seem to treat this game more seriously than ourselves, although strangely their enthusiasm has diminished since they stopped winning it. They are expecting to bring a big crowd for this one, which should create a half decent atmosphere if nothing else. They got their season underway on Saturday with a win over Dumbarton and must fancy their chances against us. They have a load of former Gretna players in their squad, James Grady perhaps being the most familiar. A Paisley man, he is much hated by the Saints fans and his time in blue and white won't be helping his cause. He'll probably get a bit of abuse, which might make things interesting.

No extra-time in this one, just straight to penalties - assuming its level after 90 minutes of course.
