Saints v Hamilton Academical Preview

Last updated : 24 December 2004 By Stuart Gillespie
Saints will have a full squad for the match, which means Kevin McGowne will be fit to return to defence. This should see Saints resort to a back three. We could have gone with this last week with Mark Dempsie playing, but Gus MacPherson went for a back four with Andy Millen as a centre back, which was never going to work. McGowne will replace either Simon Lappin or Laurie Ellis. Apart from that the team will be relatively unchanged.

Saints have lost their last three games, against Airdrie United, Falkirk and St. Johnstone. Hamilton are on a decent run of form at the moment, having beaten Partick Thistle at Firhill last weekend and taken seven points out of a possible nine, so Sunday's match will not be easy by any means.

Hamilton are currently fourth bottom, last week's win giving them some breathing space over ninth placed Thistle. On their return to the First Division they have been where most people expected them to be, near the bottom and fighting with relegation. That Thistle and Ross County are two of the teams may be a surprise, and no doubt the fact that Hamilton are seventh, three points above relegation, will bring a smile to the faces of their supporters over the festive period.

The most important player for Hamilton this season was expected to be striker Brian McPhee. However, the former Livingston man has only managed to score three goals so far this season. Unfortunately for Saints, those goals have come in his last four Hamilton matches. Hopefully he won't improve his tally on Sunday.

After three defeats on the bounce, Saints desperately need to stop the rot with a win. It would help us close up on Clyde and get away from the chasing pack. Hopefully the players can get the win and give us some festive cheer.
