Saints v Gretna Preview

Last updated : 28 March 2008 By Stuart Gillespie
After Gretna released 22 players (many of them youngsters) during the week, you would think this should be an easy game for Saints. For most other clubs it probably would be. Not for us, however. If a team is ever in need of a win or a striker needs a goal, play us. We are terrible when we're favourites to win games, regardless of whose in charge, how we're playing or what league we are in. Tomorrow is no different. it has all the hallmarks of another screw up.

Making our task even worse is the fact we're without four players. David Barron and Franco Miranda are suspended, while Gary Mason and David van Zanten are injured. As Barron and van Zanten are both right backs, this is particularly bad news, while we have struggled without Mason at other points during the season. There's a good chance we'll go with a back three and play someone like Stpehen McGinn out wide right, with Mark Corcoran down the left. We have a lot of midfielders so five in there makes sense.

Stephen O'Donnell and Richard Brittain could make their long awaited first team returns, the former especially after scoring for the reserves during the week. This could well be their last chance to impress manager Gus MacPherson and convince him they deserve to be at the club next season. To be honest, they should probably be on their way, but as they've been out for the past six months or so they are probably deserving of another chance. Alan Reid could also come in as he bids to win a contract, while youngsters such as Marc McAusland and Mark Docherty may get their debuts.

Gretna may have lost a number of players, but they still have all the ones that started against Celtic last week. Interestingly, that doesn't include a recognised striker! Gretna's financial woes have been well documented in recent weeks as their "dream" turned into a nightmare. Still, they haven't dne too badly in their last few games - almost making it until half time before losing a goal. Considering our incompetence in the striking department this season, there's a good chance they'll last even longer, forcing our fans to get unrestless. However, caretaker boss Mick Wadsworth won't be in charge of the side tomorrow as he is trying to fix up another job for next season. Mind you, considering his track record that could be a good thing!

I won't predict an exact result for tomorrow, however I am fairly confident that - with some of our fans looking for a big win - we'll mess up and Gretna will leave with at least a point.
