Saints v Clyde Preview

Last updated : 04 March 2005 By Stuart Gillespie
Tomorrow we play Clyde at Love Street, and on Tuesday we play them at Broadwood in a rearranged fixture from December.

Both the previous two meetings this season have been 0-0, and the second at Love Street was one of the worst games of football I can ever remember. Clyde came for a draw (if any Clyde fan wishes to debate the fact, please explain why you only played with one striker) whilst Saints lacked a cutting edge to Mixu Paatelainen being injured and Stewart Kean still being at Ayr. Of course, the week after we then gubbed Partick Thistle 3-0 at Firhill so anything can happen.

Sadly, we'll be without Mixu and Kean tomorrow as both are injured; Mixu long term and Keano for a week or so. This is not good, as it could also mean Brian McGinty starts up front. Personally I'd like to see Allan Russell playing, as he often does well against Clyde, or alternatively give John Baird a chance against his former side. Baird looked promising earlier in the season and has scored numerous goals in the reserves, so surely it is about time he was allowed his chance to show us what he can do.

Saints midweek game against Ross County saw Mark Reilly missing due to injury, however he should be fit again and will probably slot straight back into the side, probably at the expense of Ricky Gillies. I'd quite like to keep Gillies in as, despite being useless this season, he does occasionally offer a goal threat which we'll struggle to show tomorrow. The problem is, that would involve dropping Hugh Murray or leaving out Reilly, and both have been excellent this season. Knowing Gus he'll probably drop our top scorer John O'Neill instead!

Just about all of Clyde's goal threat comes from one man: Ian Harty. The striker has had another good season for Clyde and is one of the main reasons for their occupance of second spot in the table this season. Clyde also have Harty lookalike and former Saint Alex Burns on loan from Motherwell. odds on him scoring his first Clyde goal tomorrow?

Not a hard prediction to make for tomorrow. We lack cutting edge, both teams will be tired after playing SPL sides last week and playing in midweek, so I reckon a 0-0 snore draw.
