Saints v Airdrie United Preview

Last updated : 24 March 2006 By Stuart Gillespie
Many Saints fans on the web seem to think that the league is won, and whilst it is extremely close, there's still a lot of work to be done. We still need eight points from the last six games to be absolutely sure of winning the league, and with games against Ross County and St. Johnstone still to come, it will not be an easy task.

You also have to remember this is St. Mirren we're talking about. We have a habit of doing silly things, and chances are it will take us longer to wrap up the league than it really should. There's still a lot of anguish, despair and delight to be endured, and no doubt a few twists and turns left.

With that in mind, tomorrow's game will not be an easy one and hopefully no one at Love Street is taking it for granted. it will be just as tough as the other games this season, perhaps more so with Airdrie United desperate to dent our title run in.

Saints will have to make a few changes to the side that beat Brechin City 3-0 on Tuesday night. Ian Maxwell is ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury and will be replaced by Kirk Broadfoot. There are also doubts over the fitness of fellow defender John Potter, but he should be fit enough to play. Craig Hinchcliffe is, of course, also out injured.

There will be an enforced change in midfield as well. Charlie Adam, who has been excellent in the past few games, is suspended. Iain Anderson could replace him, or Simon Lappin could move into central midfield with mark Corcoran or Alan Reid playing wide left. John Sutton will definitely start up front after remembering how to score in Tuesday's game, and will be partnered by Corcoran or Stewart Kean, or even Billy Mehmet.

Airdrie are currently playing out the season, with no cup action to look forward to and no involvement in the relegation or promotion battles. They have done well this season, especially as some idiots (such as me) tipped them for relegation in the summer. Bryan Prunty has been in good form, whilst Willie McLaren has lived up to the hype surrounding him. They've managed three red cards in the three games against us this season, will we get number four?

With Saints on a good run, we're due a defeat, and I think we'll suffer. I predict a 1-0 win for Airdrie, with former Saints trialist Prunty scoring the goal.
