Saints v Aberdeen Preview

Last updated : 29 August 2008 By Stuart Gillespie
Our results against the Dons since we returned to the SPL have been fairly poor and we've managed the grand total of two goals and two draws. Aberdeen are a bit hit and miss at time - as demonstrated by an opening day defeat to Caley Thistle before a win against Motherwerll and a draw with Rangers - and it is surely time for them to have a shocker against us and finally allow us to get a win against them.

Confidence is high at Love Street after Tuesday's mauling of Dumbarton. Obviously, to expect seven goals again tomorrow (or spread out over the next few months) is a bit much. However, we have shown that we can attack teams and are fairly reasonable going forward. Manager Gus MacPherson must keep this up to show that we are not afraid of teams, especially on their own patch. It's time we caused them problems, rather than going out just to stop the other team scoring.

Most people had hoped the same team that did so well on Tuesday would start tomorrow, but an injury to Jim Hamilton means that's not possible. It's likely he'll be replaced by Craig Dargo, who scored on Tuesdya and put in a decent performance. Stephen McGinn is also injured, while Spanish midfielder Tonet is injured. Neither featured on Tuesday so it's likely Dargo coming in will be the only change.

As I mentioned above, Aberdeen have had a strange start to the season but most of their fans would probably have taken four points after three games. Manager Jimmy Calderwood has whined about financial problems at Pittodrie over the past few years before still spending a fair bit of cash, but it seems they might be a bit more genuine this time around. Tommy Wright from Darlington is the only player who has cost something, with midfielders Gary McDonald and Mark Kerr - who gifted Rangers some goals last season with horrendous passbacks - coming in on free transfers. Despite that, Calderwood still has a squad that will challenge for Europe.

It'll be interesting to see how things go tomorrow. Hopefully, we'll continue to attack our opponents after Tuesday's success but sadly I doubt it. Aberdeen to win by a goal.
