Rangers v Saints Preview

Last updated : 10 August 2007 By Stuart Gillespie
Just after Christmas, Rangers weren't very good - and were about to get even worse with the Barry Ferguson saga. Thus, it gave teams like Inverness Caley Thistle and Saints the chance to take advantage - which we did. Richard Brittain's goal secured a superb point, which was well deserved. However, Rangers are now pretty good and put three past Caley Thistle last week. Saints are not good - perhaps even worse than we were in December (if that's possible) and there is next to no chance of taking anything from tomorrow's match.

The chances were hit further this week with the fact that the two proposed signings wouldn't be available. The deal for Roy Dayan fell through, while Franco Miranda is finally a Saints player but was signed too late to have a major chance to feature tomorrow. So, with Craig Dargo, Ian Maxwell, Eddie Malone and Craig Molloy all injured, it's looking like Saints boss Gus macPherson will have the same squad of players available to him as he did for last week's poor performance against Motherwell.

It is likely that MacPherson will go with one up front - a tactic that worked well in December. The question is, which of our strikers should it be - Mark Corcoran, Billy Mehmet, Stewart Kean and Alex Burke? They're hardly likely to terrorise the Rangers defence, although Corcoran will probably get the nod due to his pace. That means we'll probably end up with two central midfielders playing on the left and right of midfield - one was bad enough last week!

Kirk Broadfoot could play against Saints tomorrow for the first time since his summer move to Ibrox. The former Saints captain has featured in both of Rangers European matches so far and will be looking to make his first SPL appearance for his new club tomorrow afternoon. Fellow ex-Saint Charlie Adam hasn't featured quite so match but could well be given the chance to terrorise his former club again tomorrow. The Gers are likely to hand debuts to two new signings - Steven Whittaker and Daniel Cousin. The last is a striker and will almost certainly get a debut goal.

Prediction wise, I reckon it will be a comfortable, even heavy, win for Rangers. Whatever the result, I'm almost certain we'll once again fail to score.
