Motherwell v Saints Preview

Last updated : 04 April 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

Dateline: Saturday May 12, 4.05pm. Location: Fir Park, Motherwell. Ross McCormack has just tucked away a penalty to give Motherwell a seemingly unassailable lead, while at Inverness Dunfermline are a goal to the good. It looks bleak for Saints in the relegation battle. Then comes the cavalry in the shape of John Sutton and Mehmet. By quarter past they've both scored twice to level things up, before Sutton fires in a late winner. In stoppage time, Caley Thistle score their own winner to secure three points and Saints SPL status. Unbelievable.

It will never be forgotten, and for that reason Fir Park will always hold happy memories for Saints fans - especially the few thousand who were there. Tomorrow won't be anywhere near as tense as it's just a normal league game. However, the aim remains the same - to leave the place with another three points and move closer to Motherwell in the table.

Just like at 4.05pm that day in May, things were looking fairly bleak for Saints a few weeks ago. Just seven points and two wins all season had been achieved, while the side had suffered some heavy defeats. How things have changed. Two games and two more wins later - including a fantastic victory against Hibs last week - leave us just a point worse off than this time last year. Now we need to go on and do what we didn't last time around - notch at least four or five wins between now and the split - to ensure we don't have another rollercoaster at Fir Park or anywhere else come May.

It should probably be the same starting eleven that picked up the three points last week that starts against Motherwell tomorrow. Andy Millen and Alex Burke have done well in the two games since their surprise returns recalls, while Garry Brady seemed to do well last week after a spell out in the cold. Billy Mehmet is in good form at the moment (a phrase I have genuinely never used before!) and, as mentioned above, scored in that game in May. Craig Dargo and Ian Maxwell are still injured, while Craig Molloy isn't fit. Eddie Malone has been loaned to Dundee to solve that problem with him.

Motherwell have, unfortunately, got a lot better since last season thanks to the arrival of new boss Mark McGhee. They scored against us at Love Street in the first few minutes of the season and could - and probably should - have added at least a couple more. They tore through our defence at times and have an incredibly attack minded approach, usually going with three up front. Chris Porter and Ross McCormack have been in good form.

Tomorrow's match should be a close one - although probably not as dramatic as the one in May. I think Motherwell's attacking prowess will see them win it - Porter and McCormack have scored five each this season while our team have managed just seven goals between them!
