Morton v Saints Preview

The cup final (we apparently still haven't played our semi-final!) is little more than a glorified friendly, a view Saints boss Gus MacPherson seems to share. No one really bothered about it during the 1990s when it was normally an end of season affair involving reserve players. However, now that it generates a big crowd as a pre-season fixture, it isn't going to go away any time soon. Saints' aim tomorrow must surely be to improve fitness and come through the game without picking up any injuries or silly suspensions. Winning the cup would be a nice bonus, but ultimately we can't risk too much for what is essentially a friendly.

Trialist Dominic Shimmin won't be featuring for Saints tomorrow. Apparently he is ineligible - despite trialists featuring in the last few finals - and will have to sit this one out. Considering he was on trial at Morton a few months ago it's probably not that bad a move! Shimmin will now have to wait until Tuesday's game against Blackpool for his next action. So too will Will Haining, Jack Ross and Ryan McCay. All three are carrying injuries and will not be risked.

Those four aside, it'll probably be a fairly strong Saints side that plays. The centre of defence could be interesting. While John Potter is a shoe in there, his likely defensive partners will all be missing. Chances are Marc McAusland will start alongside him in defence - or does this count as the sort of emergency that would see Andy Millen return once again? Everywhere else in the side should be strong. Jim Hamilton should start after scoring a double against Stirling, while expect the likes of Franco Miranda and Andy Dorman to feature as well.

There was a chance that former Saint Alan Reid could be lining up against us tomorrow after a trial spell at Cappielow, but he hasn't yet signed for Morton and is likely to miss out. As a result, Stewart Greacen - who has been out for nearly six weeks - could return at the back. Morton have made some decent signings over the summer - such as Alan McManus and Colin Stewart - while Davie Irons has brought in a number of players that were with him at Gretna. It's early days yet, but there's a fair chance the 'Ton won't be involved in a relegation battle during the coming season.

If we perform like we did on Wednesday we've a good chance. If we play like we did on Tuesday we'll be hammered. Morton area a good few weeks ahead of us in pre-season training and would have been playing a competive match had they not been given a bye in the League Challenge Cup. As a result, I reckon they'll sneak it.
