Hamilton Academical v Saints Preview

Last updated : 20 January 2006 By Stuart Gillespie
Two draws and a defeat are what Saints have managed in their three visits there. Part of the problem is now doubt down to the artificial surface there. Hamilton are the only senior team in Scotland with a plastic surface, and it is often a talking point when Saints play there. Hamilton can claim all they like that it doesn't make a difference but it does, even if it just mentally screws up our players.

Saints will be hoping for no new injuries tomorrow as they already have more than enough. Craig Hinchcliffe and Kirk Broadfoot are out for the long term, whilst Brian McGinty, Billy Mehmet and Hugh Murray have been missing for the last few weeks. Any of the trio could return tomorrow, although it is unlikely.

Broadfoot's absence has allowed Ian Maxwell his chance in the first team and he has grabbed it with both hands, as he has been in fine form. Another player who has more than taken his chance is Mark Corcoran. Over a month ago he'd have been a fair bet for a transfer window departure. However, there's no chance of that now; he has scored three goals in four games and has been in great form. He could have a new strike partner tomorrow, as John Sutton is now fit and Stewart Kean hasn't scored for a few games.

Hamilton are back up to second in the table again, having bounced around a bit from second to about fifth, as have a few teams. This allows another first v second clash. Last time we faced them in one of them we won 2-1, although Hamilton became the first team to score against us in the league at Love Street this season. Former Saint Scott Mackenzie is a doubt, whilst former Saints trialist Lee Hardy has had to retire due to injury. Hamilton keeper David McEwan has caused Saints problems in the past, but could be missing with a non footballing related injury. This could give his deputy, the wonderfully named Raymond Jellema, a chance to shine. Knowing our luck he'll play a blinder!

Saints are on a three game winning run, four if you include the Scottish Cup. However, we hate the plastic surface and I reckon we'll lose 1-0.
